Press Release: Doubt, A Parable
DRAMATIC LICENSE PRODUCTIONS AND VANITY THEATRE PRESENT DOUBT, A PARABLE
BY JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY
ST. LOUIS, MO (Mar. 30, 2009) — Dramatic License Productions—a new theatrical and cabaret production company–-presents its debut production, DOUBT, A PARABLE by John Patrick Shanley, July 30 — Aug. 15, 2009 at the Kranzberg Arts Center Black Box Theatre. The play will be produced in conjunction with Vanity Theatre and directed by Kevin Kline Award nominee, Jason Cannon.
Hot off of the successful movie version, the 2005 Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning DOUBT, A PARABLE, is a gripping story of suspicion and the nuances of moral uncertainty. With just four characters—“Sister Aloysius”, the cynical and suspicious principal of St. Nicholas School; “Father Flynn”, the affable priest who may or may not hold a dark secret; the young and inexperienced novitiate, “Sister James” and “Mrs. Muller”, the anxious mother of the school’s first African-American student—Shanley creates a taut, enthralling study of the nature of truth.
Even though set in 1964 in a Bronx, New York Catholic school, the story could not be more timely or pertinent. Less about scandal than these four blazingly individual characters’ struggle with assumptions and certainty, DOUBT, A PARABLE was named the #1 show of the year by Time Magazine, Newsday, Associated Press, and The Wall Street Journal. As described by The New York Times, DOUBT, A PARABLE is a “tight, absorbing drama” that “sends off emotional stealth charges…”
The all-St. Louis cast includes Kim Furlow as “Sister Aloysius”; Kevin Kline Award nominee and Actors Equity Association member Jason Cannon as “Father Flynn”; Kevin Kline Award nominee Sarah Cannon as “Sister James”; and Black Rep stalwart Leah Stewart as “Mrs. Muller.”
